Learn how to measure a ring

Rings are pieces of jewelry or costume jewelry that are widely used by both women and men, and with the new trends and fashions they are worn on any finger of the hand, whether left or right, and some women even wear them on their toes.

So the first thing we need to be clear about is which finger we are going to put it on, because the size will vary depending on whether it is for the little finger or the thumb, that is the first step.

Once we are clear on which finger we are going to wear the ring, we look in our jewelry box for one that fits well on that finger. It should not be so tight that it is difficult to put it on the finger, nor too loose, as it will be uncomfortable to wear.

Ring sizes are given by the inner diameter Ø , which is the space where we will place the finger.

If you can’t find one that fits the finger you want, you’ll need to measure your finger to find out what size it is .

Measuring a ring with a ruler or tape measure

This method is very simple, and we will only need a ruler or tape measure to know what the internal diameter is. To do this, we must place the tape measure or ruler on a flat surface, and if it is a tape measure, make sure that it is well stretched.

Then we will place the ring so that one of the internal faces is located over zero, and that it is in the position to measure the widest part of the ring, that is, the diameter.

In this case, the ring measures 17 mm in diameter, which corresponds to a size 14 in Spain or a size 7 in the US system. The problem with this method is that you cannot know the tenths, so the measurement will not be very precise.

With a caliber

This system is much more precise than the previous one, but we need a gauge to take the measurement of the interior. This is important, since ring sizes are in millimeters and tenths.

Example:

• Size 14 corresponds to 17.2 mm diameter
• Size 15 corresponds to 17.5 mm diameter
• Size 16 corresponds to 17.8 mm diameter

As we see, within the same millimetre there are 3 sizes that are separated by a few tenths.

The way to measure a ring with the precision of a jeweler is with a ring sizer or gauge. You must place the lugs on the inside of the ring and read the measurement on the display or on the scale for analog gauges.

With a paper template

This is another very popular option, especially among online jewelry stores that offer this possibility so you can find out your size without having to leave home, although you will need a printer and A4 paper.

First you have to download the template and print it, then you just have to place the ring on the different circumferences until you find the one that fits best, and you already have the size and inner diameter.

How to measure your finger to find out your size

It’s best to have a reference ring to know your ring size, but if you don’t have one or it’s for a finger you’ve never worn before, such as your thumb or pinky, you can use these methods to find the size that best fits your finger.

In this case, we are going to measure the circumference of the finger in order to calculate the ring size. But first, you should know that your fingers change during the day, being more swollen at the end of the day or on very hot days.
